LOFT
BOSTON, MA
A young doctor desired an open plan and the maximization of existing natural light
Complete build-out of an existing from his unfinished concrete shell
live-work loft. This loft is a rectilinear volume that is subdivided into a variety of programmatic typologies using formal and material distinctions, floor level changes, and translucent and movable partitions.
One of the main features of the design is a diagonally angled glass partition that divides the main living space from a raised private space. These two spaces are further distinguished by a change from polished concrete floors to wood and stone. The raised private space is sub-divided into a semi-private bedroom and private bathroom, located behind the floating translucent glass partition, and a semi-public office or workspace area located in front of the glass partition. The workspace area is partially contained between two oversized columns, suggesting an enclosure without actually building walls that would obscure the natural light and views to the west and roof deck. The existing curved diagonal wall in the main living area, custom finished to reflect and diffuse light into the space, is modulated by a sculptural display cut-out and floats between the floor and ceiling to expand the perceptual depth of the loft.
